Zuhd: An Anti-dote to Consumerism Culture

Zuhd: An Anti-dote to Consumerism Culture

Zuhd: An Anti-dote to Consumerism Culture

One of the biggest enemies of productivity in our world today is the comfortable consumerism culture that we’re living in.
Zuhd: An Anti-dote to Consumerism CultureEverything is within reach and we’re constantly looking for the latest, quickest, or smallest! Each of us (except whom Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) had mercy upon) is literally ‘killing’ themselves running after acquiring more and more of today’s world and what’s sad about this is that we, as Muslims, should know better.
History seems to repeat itself, for the Muslim Ummah did indulge in such consumerism more than 1,000 years ago, during the Golden Age of the Islamic civilisation. The success of the expanding empire brought new riches unknown to the early Muslims which started corrupting the Muslims and making them forget their true purpose. True to the words of the Prophet (Peace be upon him), this consumerism destroyed us. In a hadeeth, the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) said: By Allah, it is not the poverty about which I fear in regard to you but I am afraid in your case that (the worldly) riches may be given to you as were given to those who had gone before you and you begin to vie with one another for them as they vied for them. And these may destroy you as these destroyed them. (Sahih Muslim, Book #042, Hadith #7065).

Fighting Consumerism

So what’s the problem with consumerism? And what’s the cure? This is what we’ll try to tackle in this article insha’Allah.
At first glance, nothing seems to be wrong with consumerism, in fact the objective seems noble and peaceful: it’s about living a comfortable and happy life and enjoying this world to the fullest. Nothing sinister, right? Well, not really. If you start thinking of our lives in terms of dunya AND Akhira, you start to realise that this consumerism culture is actually a distraction us from our true purpose in life, of worshipping Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) and being His true vicegerent on Earth.
Let me give you an example: Imagine a student who’s supposed to start his University degree this year, he’s so concerned about ‘comfort’ that he asks for a special couch in the lecture hall, 3D HDTV screen to watch his favourite show whilst the lecture is going on, and of course popcorn and a packet of chips, and he doesn’t want to take exams nor do any assignments. Who thinks this student would survive university life? Or would even get a degree?! Sounds bizarre, right? But that’s exactly what we’re doing, instead of us working for our Akhira, we’re so concerned about the comforts of this life and how we can make our lives just that bit extra comfortable and easier, that we’re trading our finite world with the infinite Akhira! There’s nothing wrong in being comfortable; but when this becomes our sole objective, that’s when it becomes a problem!
Another issue with consumerism culture is that it literally entraps and enslaves people so they think of nothing else but how to ‘get more and have more’. People get into debt to buy bigger houses, get into more debt to buy a better car, few years down the line, once they’ve paid their debts, they go through the whole cycle again and get into more debt. We always want the latest, biggest, smallest, newest, and as the Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: ”Nothing fills (satisfies) the son of Adam except Dust”. (Sahih Bukhari, Book #76, Hadith #445) i.e. A person will never be satisfied till he meets death. The cash-less credit card society is teaching us to buy now and worry about paying later. It is directly feeding us into a 25-50 year slavery to financial institutions and banks; on most accounts, this was one of the reasons behind the recent severe global financial crisis.
A third grave consequence of the consumerism lifestyle – and this one has truly affected the Muslims – is that we’ve become lazy, expecting “others” to produce whilst we consume. We do not grow what we eat, we do not make what we wear, we do not produce what we ride, everything is imported from planes to biscuits! And everything is at our convenience. But there’s a problem here: we become dependants on “others” for our survival, and hence have a weak economic status in the international sphere. How do you think China, India and Brazil started to get noticed by the ‘Developed World’? They became producing/exporting countries and unless we as Muslims really get our act together and export more than we import, I’m afraid the consequences would be severe for the Ummah.

An Anti-dote: Zuhd

So how do we get out of this? Al-hamdulillah, we’ve a very powerful Islamic concept that would work as an anti-dote to consumerism culture. This is known as ‘Zuhd’ (known in English as Asceticism). Unfortunately, this concept has been grossly misunderstood and misinterpreted by many Muslims to mean complete refusal of dunya, hiding in a corner, and living a miserable, harsh and sad life.
Far from this, Zuhd according to the Sunnah of the Prophet (Peace be upon him) and the understanding of the Companions (May Allah be pleased with them) has a very simple but powerful meaning: it means to hold dunya in your hand, but not letting it into your heart. What this means is that you should work for dunya, but never let that take over your life that you forget the Akhira. You should build this dunya but when you’re asked to sacrifice some of it for Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) and His Messenger (Peace be upon him), you can easily do it, because the dunya is in your hands and not your heart.
If we look at the life of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) and His companions, we’d find many examples of such understanding of ‘Zuhd’. Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) once said: ”The worldly comforts are not for me. I am like a traveller, who takes a rest under a tree in the shade and then goes on his way.” (Tirmidhi). The companions of the Prophet (Peace be upon him) even feared the worldly pleasures. One example being that a meal was brought to ‘Abdur-Rahman bin ‘Auf once when he was fasting. He said: ”Mustab bin ‘Umar was martyred and he was better than I and was shrouded in his Burd and when his head was covered with it, his legs became bare, and when his legs were covered his head got uncovered. Hamza was martyred and was better than I. Now the worldly wealth has been bestowed upon us (or said a similar thing). No doubt, I fear that the rewards of my deeds might have been given earlier in this world.” Then he started weeping and left his food. (Sahih Bukhari, Book #23, Hadith #365).
I want to emphasize at this point, that I’m not against people improving their livelihood in this world and enjoying the blessings of Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala). Some of the Companions (May Allab be pleased with them) of the Prophet (Peace be uponhim) had thriving businesses, ate good food, and built nice homes, but once the call to sacrifice for Islam came, they threw all that away and ran for the Akhira.
Work and Sacrifice were the building blocks of the Islamic civilisation, not the palaces, art, and consumerism lifestyle. Those who came after the first 3 generations of Islam forgot these 2 ingredients and the Muslim civilisation declined.
After all that, don’t worry – there’s still hope!
We can still pick up the tools that were left by our ancestors, the tools of hard work and sacrifice, and rebuild our Ummah bi’ithnillah. Equipped with these, we can push dunya from our hearts and into our hands. Individually and collectively we can rebuild a new beginning for the Muslim Ummah – one that fights consumerism, encourages production, and gives back to the world more than it consumes.

Some Practical Tips

I leave you with 3 tips to help you take action today:
  1. Adopt a Minimalistic lifestyle: Build your life around what you ‘need’, rather than what you ‘want’. Be like the traveller as the Prophet (Peace be upon him) said in the hadeeth and live simply. Donate or throw away what you don’t need, and only keep those items that are essential to your day to day life. Believe me, you’ll feel so much ‘lighter’ as a consequence. (If you want more details about how to life a minimalist life, I highly recommend mnmlist website:
  2. Invest more, consume less: Try your best to always invest more of your resources (time, money, strength) and consume less. Invest your time in learning, helping others, volunteering, and worshipping. Invest your money in charity, new or existing businesses, helping Muslim charities and non-profit organisations. Invest your strength in working for Allah (Subhanhu Wa Ta’ala), helping the poor and needy and supporting those around you in whatever physical means possible.
  3. Spread the simplicity message: Encourage your family and friends to live a simple life rather than a material based one. It was said that simplicity is a part of faith and therefore try to spread the message about how we can fight our consumerism culture and what actions we can take from the Qur’an and Sunnah today to achive this. With sincere intentions and hard work, it can be done!
I hope this article has inspired you to take a look into your life differently, and inspired you look at dunya as a door to Akhira and not a door to limited comfortable life.

Education key to Muslim empowerment: Hussain Madavoor

http://saudigazette.com.sa/index.cfm?method=home.regcon&contentid=20130419161999

Hassan Cheruppa
Saudi Gazette (20th April 2013)

JEDDAH — An Indian scholar said empowerment through education is the key to success for some 190 million Muslims of India in all walks of life.

Hussain Madavoor, general secretary of the All India Islahi Movement (AIIM), called for exerting efforts to uplift the community by taking advantage of all incentives and packages introduced by the federal government and state governments. He urged the Muslim minorities to respect India’s unique multicultural and multi-religious diversity and try to become more accommodative while living in a pluralist society.

Speaking to Saudi Gazette, Madavoor thanked Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah for his noble gesture to give a three-month reprieve to rectify the status of foreigners living in the Kingdom. “Such a gesture was not new from this humanitarian King who is keen to promote the welfare of the people of the country, including citizens as well as guest workers,” he said.

Madavoor was in the Kingdom for a short visit after taking part in a two-day National Muslim Minority Educational Conference, organized by AIIM in New Delhi on April 8 and 9.

“The conference was a landmark achievement in the history of AIIM with regard to its ongoing initiatives to uplift Muslims, one of the most backward communities in a country with a population of 1.2 billion. India’s Minister of Minority Affairs K. Rahman Khan inaugurated the conference.”

Madavoor said his movement is making all endeavors to achieve its long-term goal of empowering Muslims through education. “For the last five or six years we have been concentrating in states with a sizeable population of Muslims such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Assam, Jharkand and Hariyana. We focus on making Muslims in north India embrace reform in their traditional madrasa education system, which is often blamed for their backwardness.”

He said efforts to improve the lot of Muslims in north India, especially in villages, will succeed only through reform of religious schools (madrasas) where clerics wield a great influence. “The maulanas (clerics) allow the local communities to accept neither modernization nor government funding. In this scenario, we convened meetings of madrasa heads and tried to convince them the advantages of gaining modern education,” he said, while noting that the traditional madrasa education in which there is no room for modern subjects like science and mathematics is the only education received by a large number of rural Muslims in several parts of the country.

“We are concentrating on this aspect by enlightening them that if they receive modern education, then those who are not regular students can write examinations through National Open School or Indira Gandhi National Open University and eventually come to the main stream,” he said.

According to Madavoor, the conference stressed the need for boosting efforts to make rural Muslims beneficiaries of several government schemes. “They have no idea about the government-funded schemes and programs like the prime minister’s 15 point program, as well as various schemes, scholarships and infrastructure funds from the Central Waqaf Board and the Maulana Azad Foundation. They don’t know how to register a charity trust or even the basic paperwork beginning from filling up an application form,” he said, and noted that other minority communities are the major beneficiaries of these schemes because of greater awareness. He said his organization was concentrating on educating the Muslim community on how to properly utilize government aid.

“Apart from the education program,” Madavoor said, “our movement is also focusing on relief works. Many villages in the northern and northeastern states of India lack even basic facilities like schools, drinking water facilities and health centers, and hence we introduced nearly 500 projects within the last five years to address these problems.”

He noted that the AIIM is not channelizing any government funds for this purpose but instead gives guidance to establish NGOs so as to enable them to receive government funds.

Madavoor also spoke about their charity housing schemes for the riot victims, mostly Muslims, in Assam. “We purchased plots of land in the riot-hit regions and started preliminary works to build houses. During last winter, we distributed woolen blankets worth 15 million rupees among the poor in Delhi and other parts of north India,” he said noting that there are about 250,000 Muslim homeless who are sleeping on pavements and sidewalks in Delhi alone.

Madavoor said his movement is also concentrating on holding interfaith meetings in north India as a healing touch to the wounds of the partition that created Hindu-only villages and Muslim-only villages. “We convened meetings of prominent people and village heads as part of building a bridge of cooperation and proper understanding. We focus our work on uplifting the community by upholding values of India’s unique multicultural and multi-religious diversity. If we ignore this, it would be counterproductive. The minorities should always be cautious about that as they live in a pluralist society, and they should not hurt the feelings of others. We should win the confidence and respect of the majority community through our works to ensure peaceful coexistence.”

Madavoor emphasized his movement’s efforts to put an end to various kinds of exploitations taking place in the name of religion. He also spoke about AIIM’s short-term goal of financial empowerment of Muslims. “We focus on providing short-term training to village people to start self-employment schemes like the raising of cattle through making use of various funds. We have planned to generate jobs for the poor, especially Muslim women through such programs,” he said, while noting that literacy rate among Muslim women in many north Indian states is less than 20 percent.

Madavoor is a renowned scholar and academic who won first rank in bachelor’s degree in Islamic studies with a specialization in comparative study of six religions from Umm Al-Qura University of Makkah in 1984. He retired from Kerala government service on March 31 after serving as principal of Rouzathul Uloom Arabic College, Calicut, for 15 years. He is also one of the founders of the Indian Islahi centers in the Kingdom.

Nitaqat - an opportunity for change / improvement

Some opportunities are hidden under every challenge!

NITAQATH is a new challenge paused in front of the expatriate (pravasee) community in KSA.

At this stage instead of worrying and taking short term steps, we should make some long term plans and solutions.

The changing scenario of the labour market in KSA is not new. When I came in here, in 1991, most of the people from north Kerala were on Umrah visa, who stayed back for doing some odd jobs! Today you hardly find any Umrah visa holder at work. Number of free visa holders are also far less comparatively.

NITAQATH, should challenge us to explore creative solutions and propose them to the authorities. If we can propose some good solutions to the state and central governments now it may be heard / implemented and it will become beneficial for us in the long term!

- We should make job specific training to our work force.
- Training should be given in spoken english and spoken arabic
- Courses like Quantity surveying should be promoted (Like in Sreelanka, RICS course of UK etc.). JDT Islam polytechnic has a course on quantity surveying.
- BIM (Building Information Modelling) training should be promoted.
- Finishing school should be promoted
- Make plans to transfer the experience of the gulf returnees to the job market of Kerala. make them interact with the new generation job seekers.
- Promote mentoring of professional students by a subject expert from the job market.

Let all of us, individuals & organizations, try to make recommendations in our area of expertise. Let government officials be informed of those proposals. Let us make the required lobbying to make sure that there are some changes / improvements made out of this challenge, NITAQATH.

Tail: I saw the news that in TIRUR, someone has opened a chicken stall named after NITAQATH!

Promoting Charity: Some unique models

Dear friends,

We are all doing charity activities in our circle. Recently I came across with few commendable modes of charity.

1. Pass it on to a stranger:

You may come across with individuals from different walks of life daily. In this method you give any amount, be it even very small amount like ten rupees, to any one you meet (may be at a petrol pump, at a railway station, at a fast food waiting area, at a function, at the ground....)! Ask the stranger to add any amount he wishes to the amount you gave and let him pass the total amount to another stranger. Let the third person give it to a fourth person with little more addition and with the same instruction. As the chain moves the amount will become something big (Very BIG?) and can be either  a) divided and distributed again or b) given some part to a poor needy person while a small amount again to continue in the charity chain...........

Recently one gentlemen distributed around 100 single currency to the attendees of a workshop. Some got one , some others got two /three notes. He asked them to pass it on to others outside the workshop with the above message. At least around 50 chains of charity were created there! Today only God knows where that money has reached and how much it has grown! And how many got benefited from some of the chains!

Do you like it...........Start this model from today and share this message to others.

2. Meeting day charity box:

We all attend various meetings. Here is what a smart group known to me does while they meet:
At the end of the meeting all the attendees put some amount in to a locked charity box. Each individual is free to put whatever amount he or she likes to put. The box will be kept in a place where others can not see how much each individual is dropping in to the box. If you don't want to put money, just go near the box give your blessing and come back. When everyone is finished the box shall be brought to the meeting table. It will be opened publicly.
The group will discuss where to spend this collected amount as charity.  Irrespective of the individuals amount it is the group's common amount now. They all feel the inner satisfaction.

Two or three members from the meeting shall be responsible to distribute the amount as charity. Only one condition, the recipient should be be an unknown poor person or family.

I am sure some of you might have even better ideas than these ones to promote charity.

- Don't hesitate to share your creative charity promotion thoughts in the comments column.
- Remember that all the richest people in the world were / are great donors (Warren Buffet, Bill Gates........)

God has promised that our wealth will not be reduced from charity. Its a proven promise all through ages! (Remember Aboobacker (RA), the first Khaleefa of Islam donated all his wealth in charity at one occasion.)

YOU PROMOTE CHARITY ALSO BY SIMPLY SHARING THIS POST TO OTHERS.

Discover Yourself Workshop in Jeddah - 14, 15 and 16th Feb 2013

Bismillah....

Engr. Sadatullah Khan from Banglore, Editor of Islamic voice magazine,  conducted his famous "DISCOVER YOURSELF" workshop at Lucky Darbar Auditorium in Jeddah on 14,15 and 16th Feb 2013.

The workshop was organized by the All India Islahi Centre, Jeddah :
http://islahicetrejeddah.com/
www.discoveryourself.in

All the lucky attendees of the workshop were having hundred tongues to appreciate the workshop and Engr. Sadat. A couple of brothers from Saudi Arabia, few brothers and sisters from Pakistan, from Srilanka, from various states of India and a Jordanian were part of the 120 registered attendees.

This was the third workshop of Engr. Khan in Jeddah. The last time he conducted his workshop in Jeddah was in may 2010.

The changes this workshop brought to the attendees in three days were amazing! It was a unique experience indeed! We went through a transformation through real time experience.

"I am finding it very difficult to find right words to explain my experience, going through this workshop. Just in word,  I ‘REINVENTED MYSELF’. Till the other day, I had lost my self completely and thought life is not worth living !
But, today I know who am I & the life is really as beautiful as the Creator meant it to be.
It was not just  a WALK THE TALK SHOW, it was surely a  ‘SHAKE THE HEART’ SHOW, compelling overhauling of one’s own inner self & awareness….." Wrote on of the attendees by email to the organizers.

Let us try to reproduce all the terminologies he used in the workshop like State of nothingness, the word..............

I request all workshop attendees to write few words about their experience about the workshop and about the Trainer in the COMMENTS COLUMN here.

Let us remember the words of Eng. Sadatulla Khan about the importance of sharing.

Please spend some time to make a proper sharing.

With kind regards and prayers,
Abdul Lathief Parappurath

Tipu Sultan University

MANGALORE: Governor HR Bhardwaj on Wednesday said that the people who oppose setting up of the Tipu Sultan University at Srirangapatna are not "proper" people.

The governor told reporters, "This is a secular country. Those people who are biased against minorities are not proper people. They should realize that all of us have to sink or swim together. What's wrong in naming the university after a national hero? Can anybody deny this? It is most welcome. Minorities have rights in this country and it is not good to isolate them."

Minority affairs minister K Rahman Khan' who was termed as "spokesperson of terrorists" by BJP spokesperson G Madhusoodan, said he would not comment on a personal remark made against him. ``The government will go ahead with its work (of setting up the university),'' he added.

KPCC president Parameshwara and Congress leader Janardhan Poojary also condemned BJP spokesperson G Madhusoodan's remarks. Madhusoodan had said that land cannot be given to Tippu Sultan Central University at Srirangapatna.

Parameshwara said Tipu is a patriot and a secular person. ``There should be talk of amity and not divisive or communal politics,'' he added. The Union ministry of minority affairs had in November last year announced that it would set up five universities across the country under the private-public partnership model where minority students will get 50% reservation.
